What does the energy crisis mean for zero waste?

Watch now

According to the International Energy Agency, the world is experiencing the first truly global energy crisis in history. The situation is especially perilous in Europe, which the IEA claims is at the epicentre of the energy market turmoil, exacerbating problems that existed before but have only worsened because of the war in Ukraine.

In mid 2022, the European Union released a new strategy, ’RePowerEU,’ that aims to end the EU’s dependence on Russian fossil fuels whilst also tackling the climate crisis. Whilst the energy crisis provides an immediate threat to citizens today, the longer term costs and damage caused by inaction against climate change remain far greater. It’s therefore imperative that decision-makers ensure our long-term goals of creating a circular, net-zero society remain at the centre of any short-term deals to increase energy availability.

As we head into a winter in Europe, where demand for energy will only increase and could result in rationing and disruption, we are convening a webinar to look at what this current energy crisis means for the principles and practical application of zero waste, in the short and long term.

This webinar will go into greater depth to address the following key questions and more:

  • Can the circular economy and zero waste help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels?
  • What role do zero waste systems and solutions play in helping bring about a more sustainable and independent energy policy in Europe?
  • What solutions exist in the short and mid-term to avoid the energy crisis preventing progress towards zero waste and how do they differ in different European contexts?
